Daniel and Laura Curtis launch the YOUR VOICE 2016 Competition!

Daniel and Laura Curtis are two of the most talented writers I have ever come across. Their music and lyrics are so enchanting and so emotive that you become completely swept away by the beauty of their work – whether it is by the happiest of songs or the most heartbreaking.

Ahead of the October release of their new album OVERTURE, which will feature stars from the West End and Broadway, Daniel and Laura have launched the YOUR VOICE 2016 Competition, in support of The Kindred Foundation for Adoption.

With a stellar judging line up that includes Simon Bowman, Nadim Naaman, Jason Forbach and Natalie Weiss, and a winners’ prize package that includes a workshop with Broadway star Adam Pascal – this is definitely one not to be missed!

All the details of how to enter the competition can be found at http://www.yourvoicecompetition.com or http://www.danandlauracurtis.com/, where you can also listen to the official competition single “Standing On My Own” by the stunning Jenna Ushkowitz, as well as pre-order your copy of Daniel and Laura’s new album OVERTURE.

Good luck to everyone who is taking part!!

Nadim Naaman launches SIDES (19th June 2016)

image

So if you looked at any of my social media feeds over this weekend – it seems to be all about one thing, and that was the 2 day WEST END LIVE spectacular! Now don’t get me wrong – I was one of those who sat at home yesterday watching videos that people recorded of my favourite shows.

But as Day 2 of WEST END LIVE dawned – the Trafalgar Square event may have been the talk of the STAGEY world. But there was a hidden gem also taking place that I guarantee would outshine even the brightest West End diamond.

Nadim Naaman – currently starring as Raoul in “The Phantom of the Opera” – launched his brand new album SIDES at a gig in the wonderful surroundings of the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square.

I can honestly say – hand on heart – Nadim is one of the most talented gents I have ever had the honour to meet, and this phenomenal talent was present in bucket loads at this gig.

Opening with new original track “Blinded by Fire” (Nadim’s own James Bond style  song!), he sang his heart out! Full of passion, drive and energy – he commanded the stage and held the focus of the audience, who were totally with him as he took them on a journey through his inspirations, his dream roles and a set of enchanting original songs.

With support from a superb line up of guests, including Jeremy Secomb, Will Barratt and the stunning Celinde Schoenmaker, we as an audience also got to see how well Nadim interacts with colleagues on stage. Stand out duets included new original track “Falling” sung with the astoundingly stunning Laura Tebbutt, a hauntingly beautiful Titanic duet with Rob Houchen   and a mind blowingly brilliant Phantom duet with Will Barratt – that reduced this Phan to tears of joy, it was so moving! Barratt also featured on the gigs spectacular finale number – 6 Michael Jackson songs straight after each other! Yes – you read that right and it was genius!!

I could list every song as a highlight for me – but I must mention “Blinded by Fire”, “Falling”, “Here I Am” (a song Nadim wrote for Jeremy Secomb), the moving Phantom duet and Nadim’s take on James Bay as standouts for me!

But it was another original track- “This’ll Be The Year” – that, for me, really summed the day up.

Having seen Nadim on numerous occasions since before his first album launch – it struck me today how far he has come. As he stood up there, I saw more confidence, power and conviction in him than I’ve ever seen in him before (and I’ve seen him perform quite a few times!) and his voice soared to new highs which was such a joy to witness. I can only hope SIDES brings him the recognition and success that a talent like his so deserves. Trust me – this is an album you don’t want to miss!

Everyone may think they saw the best of the best down in Trafalgar Square today – but I witnessed a true star shining brighter than he ever has before – and there was nowhere else I would have rather been ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

ALBUM REVIEW – Anna O’Byrne’s “Dream”

I first had the absolute honour of seeing Anna O’Byrne perform live on stage when she was playing the role of Christine in the legendary (and my all time favourite!) “Phantom of the Opera” at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London. From the first moment she stepped onto the stage – I was completely captivated by her truly enchanting and all round phenomenal performance.

Anna continued to showcase her stunning talent around the world on stage. But now, she has taken to the recording studio to release her debut solo album, entitled “Dream.”

The album contains a beautifully diverse range of musical genres and styles and really does give the listener a huge insight into the music and artists that have inspired Anna in her career.

From “Sense and Sensibility”, to “State Fair” and a classic James Bond theme to name just a few, there are tracks on here for everybody.

And it’s not just Anna’s solo talent that shines on the album. In duets with the legendaryย  Rebecca Caine and former Love Never Dies co-star Ben Lewis, we see an even more elegantly charming side to Anna’s voice – it is very easy to hear how much she is having!

“Dream” is a truly mesmerising collection of enchanting music delivered by the voice of one of the most talented sopranos you will ever be blessed to hear. This album is for everyone, and I only hope that it will give Anna even more worldwide recognition that she so deserves!

STAGEY SHORTS VOLUME 2: Sherlock does Shakespeare; Getting Kinky has never felt so good and a LEGEND returns to the Mask!

Well last time I produced an edition of STAGEY SHORTS, it seemed to go down well! So I thought what was the best way to catch you all up on what I’ve been up to in the past 7 months then with STAGEY SHORTS – Volume 2!!

************************

One of my biggest theatre highlights of the past 7 months was having the absolute honour of seeing Benedict Cumberbatch as HAMLET at the Barbican, not once – but TWICE! (Once from the very front row ๐Ÿ˜ฎ)

Now I will be the first to admit that I am a huge fan of Mr Cumberbatch – but even I will admit his performance was nothing short of phenomenal! It was completely overwhelming to be able not only to see him live on stage but, being a Shakespeare loving English teacher by day, to see him give such an impactful and powerful performance is something I will hand on heart never forget! Many are saying Cumberbatch doesn’t deserve all the award nominations he is getting and he is only getting them because of his “star power!” But trust me – he deserves every piece of recognition for what was and will always be an absolute masterclass in acting and performance!

One of the newest smash hits to arrive in London recently is the utterly brilliant KINKY BOOTS, now playing at the Adelphi Theatre. The show has already been a smash hit over on Broadway thanks to a creative team including the brilliant Jerry Mitchell and the legendary Cyndi Lauder, and it was only a matter of time before it arrived in the UK!

I was so excited to see this show at the end of last year for the first time – and if you haven’t seen it, you are missing out on one of the most uplifting, joyous and fabulous shows that the West End has ever seen! A phenomenal cast – lead by Killian Donnelly and Matt Henry – bring the house down and if you don’t leave with a smile on your face, there must be something wrong with you ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

I will say this – and I said this about Katie Brayben last year – if Matt Henry doesn’t win the Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical this weekend, it will be an utter travesty! For me, this is a career defining performance that deserves every accolade around!

***************************

And finally! You all know how much I adore Phantom of the Opera – so it would be wrong of me to not mention the recent return of a certain legend to the Opera House.

John Owen Jones has always been one of my favourite Phantoms, and seeing him for the first time in the role when the show went on a UK Tour in 2012 is still one of my all time favourite Theatre memories. So when I heard he would be returning to the Brilliant Original for a short time – I knew I had to see him once again.

And let’s just say, on both of the occasions I got to witness this legend at work – it was just sheer perfection. You know when you are watching a genius at work – everything is just so on point and performed with such ease, eloquence and grace! And that is exactly what I felt watching John Owen Jones on stage. I only hope it is not the last time we see him don the legendary mask!

A special mention must also go to the new cast members at Her Majesty’s Theatre who are one of the most sensational ensembles I have ever seen in this production.ย  I must name Celinde Schoenmaker and Nadim Naaman who alongside John Owen Jones are one of the most outstanding lead trios I have ever had the honour to see perform!

And that’s it for STAGEY SHORTS Volume 2! I hope you enjoyed this very brief catch up and I hope it’s not long until we catch up again ๐Ÿ˜Š

When life gives you eggs, make an Omelette!

Has it really been 7 months since my Blog was last in action? I can’t believe it’s been so long!
Sadly – the reason for my absence is due to many “real life” things that, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t handling very well. I’m still not quite back to full strength, as they say – but I’m hoping I will be soon.
The biggest personal news I have to share is that my dream holiday due to New York that was due to happen in exactly 10 days time has had to be postponed! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™
Sometimes life throws you a curve ball that you don’t expect and you have to deal with that as a priority. I won’t lie – I cried many, many tears over this decision – but it was the right decision to make.
New York WILL happen – just a little bit later than scheduled, which I’m hoping will be Easter 2017! Just means NYC has got a bit longer to get ready for my awesomeness ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰
It’s just like SOMETHING ROTTEN says – “When life gives you eggs, make an Omelette!”
